Everyone these days seems to have a different philosophy on the best way to lose weight, gain muscle, and look and feel fabulous. Coaches, books, blogs, fads, videos, and more are all selling the best way to achieve results… It can be exhausting to sift through all the material and know what is real and what is not, let alone execute all the different trends and regimens to get results. I want to break down my fitness philosophy for you based on my own experimentation with my body and coaching numerous clients to fat loss and lean gain success. There is not one best way to go about weight loss… everyone’s body is different! There are some myths I want debunk and then hit on the fact that a sustainable fitness lifestyle if a journey; and a very customizable journey at that!
There is no quick fix to attaining and sustaining a fit physique. The human body is made to adapt and depending on what you put into your body, how your body utilizes food for energy, and what type of exercise you perform, the body will respond accordingly. The key to leading a sustainable fitness lifestyle and feeling good about how your body looks and feels is to approach fat loss and lean mass gains in a way that allows for flexibility and sustainability through gradual adaptation of the process.
If you have crash dieted, yo-yo dieted, or been on some extreme form of diet and/or exercise regimen in the past that has damaged your metabolism so that you can no longer burn fat efficiently or you have hit a plateau, you are not alone. There are ways to coax your body into repairing itself by approaching things sustainably, avoiding extremes, and focusing on the longevity of your sport while staying injury free both physically and metabolically. I can coach you on how to do this through customized training and nutritional guidance utilizing flexible dieting.
Perhaps you are looking for more nutritional guidance to get your physique in peak condition for an upcoming occasion or want to be fitter in general. Maybe you are looking to compete for the first time in a bikini/physique competition or are a seasoned competitor looking to reach your full potential through sustainable methods. Either way, you have come to the right place.
I work with fat loss clients and competitors. I say fat loss instead of weight loss because lean muscle gains are an important part of increasing your metabolism to be able to lose fat. It would not look compositionally aesthetic for you to lose muscle while holding onto excess fat even if it meant your weight went down. Too often, people are concerned with what the scale says when there are a lot of changes that happen without the scale changing. Muscle weighs more than fat. Therefore, if you are building muscle which is supporting your metabolic capability and increasing fat loss, you could be gaining weight but appear much leaner and toned.
Many woman stay away from lifting weights in the gym because they are concerned with gaining too much muscle. I often hear women saying they want to get “toned,” but not too big. However, gaining muscle through resistance training and optimizing these muscle gains through nutrition is essential to looking toned. What appears to be bulky muscle is typically excess fat, not the muscle itself. Customized nutrition and training paired together in a safe and sustainable way can help you achieve a lean and toned physique for life.
Because our bodies are always adapting to our internal and external environment, it is important to have a nutrition and training program that keeps you on track towards your goals. It is not possible for your body to see long term improvement from having the same plan month after month. Customized plans are important because they change regularly based on where you are currently at to get you closer to your goals. Work smarter, not harder.
