Life is only as good as your mindset.
The human mind is extremely powerful. There is something to be said about the phrase, “If you can believe it, you can achieve it.” We are our thoughts.
If you have a strong mind with no way to control it and it goes off the deep end… there is no hope for you. On the other side, if you have a strong mind and you are able to harness its power and use it to get you where you want to go in life, you have it made.
In the health and fitness industry there is a lot of emphasis on the superficial aesthetics of the human form. But it is what lies beneath the superficial barriers of our skin and into the depths of our minds that gets us to our peak conditioning come show day and keeps us in control and continuously improving or bettering ourselves after a show. Or not. Performance all starts and ends with mindset. Do you have a strong and healthy mindset, or a weak and unstable mindset?
Let’s talk about the difference between the two mindsets: healthy and unhealthy.
A person with an unhealthy mindset relies on validation from others and cannot think for him or herself. They feel like a hostage, trapped, unhappy, uncomfortable in their own skin. They are destructive with their thoughts, words, and actions. They might be described as toxic, selfish, narcissistic, reckless, irrational, or delusional.
A person with a healthy mindset relies on validation from nobody and is able to think for him or herself. They feel empowered, free, happy, and confident in their own skin. They are constructive with their thoughts, words and actions. They might be described as uplifting, powerful, confident, thoughtful, rational, creative, or imaginative.
Do you have a healthy or unhealthy mindset?
An unhealthy mindset can only take you so far in life… Whereas, there is unlimited power in positive thinking. With a healthy mindset you can unlock your full potential both mentally and physically. With a healthy mindset you can rise above fear and conquer your goals. With a healthy mindset you can build yourself and others up with no need for validation or feelings of inadequacy. So how do you get there?
To achieve a healthy mindset that is going to lead you down the road to fulfillment you need to start practicing it. The mind is like a muscle and needs to be trained and conditioned to grow in all the right ways. Here are a few ways to get started down the path to a positive and healthy mindset and achieving your wildest dreams:
Eating towards your goals, exercise, and plenty of rest and recovery is essential to building a strong foundation to house your thoughts. I’m talking about the basics here. Treat your body well and you will naturally feel your physical best. Try to exercise daily, try to get around 8 hours of sleep a night, and eat a balanced diet that makes you feel good about yourself. A healthy mind is a balanced mind, similar to the body. There is no need for extreme diets or regimens, just good old-fashioned nutrition, exercise, and rest and recovery. If you need help understanding how to get to a place of sustainability with your physical fitness, contact a nutrition/fitness coach and/or trainer.
To build a strong mind that will work with you and not against you, you must fill it with positive thoughts and material. Input equals output here. Reading material that is going to educate, stimulate, and challenge your mind is a great way to start.
There are a few books I’ve read over the years that have helped me or inspired a new way of thinking through things for me. Some books have even given me an idea or perspective that I could run with and kept me motivated for years on end. What we subject ourselves to leaves an impact on us. Consider the impact different material, people, thoughts, and ideas have on you and surround yourself with content that will help you grow into the person you want to become. Too much negativity or crap material can take a toll on anyone’s mindset.
Journaling is a way of releasing goals and thoughts from the mind onto paper or a word press. You can then look back and evaluate the output and assess where it is coming from to gauge the healthiness of your mindset. Sometimes I can astound myself looking back at material I wrote from years ago and how much further my mind has grown and evolved since then.
As much as other influences can affect you, it’s important to understand why. Don’t be a victim to circumstance – get to know yourself. Learn about yourself and what makes you tick so you can harness that energy and use it to get you where you want to go. Understanding what personality type you are is a great way to start. I recommend the Myers Briggs test and there is plenty of material online regarding the results to read through and understand more about yourself. Then use this information and knowledge about yourself to enrich your life and work towards your goals!
Morality is real. We only have so much time on this earth to make an impact, change, or make a mark. Don’t let that time go to waste. Surrounding yourself with friends, family, and mentors that are encouraging, uplifting, honest, and supportive is the best way to nourish your soul. We are so much stronger united together in the effort towards self-improvement than by ourselves.
With that said, alone time is just as important as community. Meditation, prayer, and/or self-reflection are essential to understanding what lies within us. We all have our own purpose on this earth and living with a nourished body, mind and soul is going to be the key to unlocking the optimal mindset to achieving that purpose.
Is it going to be easy to stay focused and consistent with a positive and healthy mindset? No, or the world would be a very different place. However, it is possible to implement a big change by doing something different everyday that adds to your overall wellbeing and peace of mind. So start there, and don’t give up. Don’t let a negative mindset grounded in fear hold you back from accomplishing your dreams. Mindset matters. So take matters into your own hands and work on improving yours today. Positivity is contagious… let inspiration spread like wildfire.
